How To Prevent A House Fire By Cleaning Your Dryer Vent

If your dryer isn’t drying your clothes like it used to, you may not need a new dryer. A dryer duct clogged with lint, reduces airflow so your dryer doesn’t dry as efficiently as it used to. One of the major signs that it’s time to have your dryer vent cleaned is the length of drying time. It should only take 30 to 45 minutes for the average size load of clothes to dry. If you notice that it is gradually taking longer to dry a load of clothes it is more than likely a venting problem.

Dryer lint is extremely flammable. In fact, clothes dryers cause many more home fires each year than chimney fires do. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries associated with the dryer vent. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.

Lint is the biggest culprit here. As you know from cleaning out your lint filter, dryers produce very large quantities of lint. Most people assume their lint traps catch all the lint, and that all they need to do is clean them out after each load. However, a significant amount of this lint is not caught by the lint trap and builds up inside the dryer vent pipe.

A clean dryer vent reduces energy and saves you money, increases the life cycle of your dryer, helps prevent dryer vent fires and will dry your clothes in less time. A good rule to go by is if your dryer vent is longer than 8 feet, have it cleaned out once a year.

Safety Tips

Clean out lint trap after every use.

Wash the lint trap screen with warm water and soap every month to remove film.

Do not run dryer when no one is home.

Take special care when clothes have been soiled with volatile chemicals.

Clean behind and under the dryer where debris can build up.

Clean lint inside the dryer and dryer motor areas.

Have the dryer inspected by a professional.

Have your dryer duct cleaned every year by a dryer vent cleaning specialist.

Clothes Dryer Vent Cleaning

A clothes dryer needs a little ongoing maintenance to keep it in safe and in proper working condition.

How does a clothes dryer work?

The way a clothes dryer works is pretty simple, it spins clothes around in hot air while an exhaust vent sends damp air outside. An exhaust tube connects to the back of your clothes dryer and then to a duct in the wall that leads somewhere outside, so all the hot, moist air coming out of the dryer ends up outside. As your heated clothes tumble in the hot air, lint comes off the fabric and most of it gets caught in the lint trap as the exhaust air passes through it. The lint trap is usually accessed either inside the dryer door or on top of the dryer and it usually looks like a plastic or wire screen. Whatever gets past the lint trap goes out the exhaust vent and duct and either clings to the sides of the tube or blows out the exhaust vent outside.

Clothes dryers blow exhaust air out through ducts, the shorter the ductwork the better. The total recommended length is less than 25 feet from the back of your dryer to the outside vent cover, that’s with a straight running exhaust duct. If you have bends and turns, it should be an even shorter distance. The more turns and the further the distance, the harder your dryer must work to move exhaust air and loose lint. The harder your clothes dryer works and the longer it runs, the sooner it will wear out and have to be replaced or repaired.

If your clothes dryer has clogged vents and ducts, there are usually a few signs you’ll see:
•	Loads of clothing will take longer to dry.
•	Clothing will be very hot and still damp when the dryer finishes.
•	The clothes dryer itself will feel hotter.

A lint-clogged clothes dryer can often consume 15 – 25 dollars worth of extra electricity every month trying to dry your clothes, so it makes good sense to keep your dryer vent and it’s ductwork clean.

So what kind of maintenance do you need to do for your clothes dryer?
Lint tends to build up in 3 areas:
1.	Inside the lint trap.
2.	Inside the flexible duct hose behind the dryer.
3.	Inside the in-wall duct work, leading to the outside vent flap.

Step one is to clean the lint trap after every load of laundry. How do you clean the lint trap? You pull out the lint trap and scrape out the lint with your fingers or bang it over the trash can to clear it out, and then replace it. When you pull out the lint trap, look around inside the dryer in the pocket where it sat, if you see more loose lint there, take it out (you can use your hand, a brush, or your vacuum). By doing this simple cleaning regularly, you will avoid 90% of clothes dryer vent problems.

Step two, once a year (or more if you suspect a problem) you should unplug your dryer and pull it out from the wall, then disconnect the exhaust tube from the dryer and the wall and clean it out with a vacuum. That cleans out area #2. Area #3 is the in-wall ductwork that leads to the outside. Clean out this area using a vacuum or blower (a leaf blower with a towel wrapped around the vent opening, to create a seal works great) along with a dryer brush or auger, put everything back together and in place, and you’re done.

Dryer is meant to dry the garments by driving water particles outside of the home with the help of a vent. They are available in two types. First type is operated through gas and another is electricity based.

Both types of the machinery dry clothes by passing warm air. Hot air creates the effect needed for clothes to dry fast. Their improper use causes fire hazards. But technique and equipments used by a professional cleaning service provider minimizes the fire risk. They consider several things like:

• Check the connection and security of unit in which exhaust pushes out hot air.
• Security of the metal pipe.
• Proper maintenance of the lint filter before loading of clothes and after the completion of drying process.
• Uses high quality vent brush for cleaning vent as well as the exhaust duct.
• Maintenance procedure is followed after disconnecting the duct.
• Interior is checked on regular basis.

Exhaust duct is important equipment used in drying clothes. Most of the experts use exhaust duct of rigid metal tubing. It helps in reducing chances of fire and support effective flow of air. The length of twenty feet is appropriate for the discharge pipe.

Most of cleaning services suggests an individual to clean the machinery at least two times in a year. Hard brushes are available in the market which helps in cleaning all the lint present inside the tube. Professional experts save a lot of time and money doing laundry. Another advantage is that it avoids fires a lot. So, one need to take help of an efficient service provider for better results.

Dryer Vent Cleaning – A Must Do Task For Every Housekeeper

You must be wondering with the types of home appliances that you have. Undoubtedly they make your job easy, fast and comfortable but there maintenance is what you feel daunting. And that is the reason why it is the most overlooked task in the recent world. Taking about the human beings will give you a clear picture. A person suffering with a number of health disorders will not be able to perform well and even he can not excel. Only the healthy body will permit you to achieve whatever you have aimed for.

Similarly only healthy machinery that is free from all the troubles can yield better results. In order to extract the maximum best output from any system it is vitally important that you make it trouble free with proper maintenance and over hauling. There are a huge number of machines that you use in your daily life but you never try to maintain or upkeep them which results in to sudden breakdowns and failures of the machines.

Amongst the variety of machines that you use a dryer is also important. It is a machine that is used to dry your cloths by spinning the water soaked by the clothes. This is really helpful in the adverse climatic conditions where there is problem in drying the clothes naturally and in certain cases where you need quick drying. This is good way and that is why most of us get it installed in our houses. You may place it anywhere and the vent pipe attached to it discharges the water came out of the drying clothes.

This machine has a long vent pipe attached to it that produces excessive heat. Some cases where the lint, dirt or fur as well as some other waste materials floating with the water gets stocked in the pipe filter, they accumulate and over a period of time make a tough shield that does not allows the heat to go outside. This excessive heat bursts out in to fire so it is really essential that all the filter pores are open so that the heat can be discharged easily. Some other reasons encompass insufficient airflow resulting from improper installation or crushed exhaust vent.

Dryer vent cleaning is thus gaining importance as it has proved to be fatal. With a view to avoid these bad accidents and ensure smooth running or your dyer vent it is vitally important that the on time cleaning is done. To facilitate you with this the markets are offering various dryer vent cleaning equipments through which you can yourself clean the pipe. Otherwise the especially dedicated services are also running that can do this job for you.

As you would have understood that the accumulated lint blocks the air flow with in the vents so need to take the necessary steps that can remove this problem. A surefire way for it is to keep the vent clean with all the equipments that are present in the market. You are the helping hand for yourself so if you have not done this earlier then go for it now.

What Dryer Vent Cleaning Systems Are Available

What Dryer Vent Cleaning Systems Are Available

At this time we often have a dryer to facilitate without difficulty getting clothing and others things dry in a small amount of time. But loads of owners fail to do though is to make certain that they test the dryer on a recurrent basis to make sure it is definitely not blocked and also that it is functioning as efficiently as it might do.

For it to perform correctly and to use up as little energy as possible we need to make certain there are no blockages at all. If you see that it does necessitate cleansing out it is quite often the trap but as a rule the vent itself that needs cleaning. A dryer vent cleaning technique is therefore desirable. What you may find is that it is fairly simple to then clean out the dryer vent channel. If you do not think up to the job in that case it is rather cheap in outlay to engage someone in order to complete the work for you.

A dryer vent cleaning system kit will make it easier to dry clothes using a lesser amount of power as the machine can then perform as it was proposed to do so. With less than a perfectly clear vent the appliance has to labor overtime simply to execute its tasks and this can lead to a break down in the appliance itself and this is in reality quite a fire hazard. Be sure that you employ the dryer tube cleaning system as habitually as you need to and this may mean that you do not run the chance of fire or the mechanism breaking.

It is as a rule the lint in clothing that will cause the blockage so be sure to test often to see that the line through the channel is wholly clear. When you pick a dryer vent cleaning system make sure that what you buy has a long enough reach to go all the entire length through and that it in addition is proper for the sort of duct that is joined to your mechanism.

With these few trouble-free things kept in mind you are now able to be confident that you will save money in the long run. As blocks build up they obstruct the correct functioning of the machine and this in turn will then indicate that the apparatus works harder for the matching result and it may possibly actually overheat and break down if we let the problem to get too bad.

You should check every few months to observe that the dryer vent is clean and use the dryer vent cleaning system if it is not absolutely free of any lint or anything else. This means now there is no danger of fire or of your mechanism simply over heating. This is a dreadfully real likelihood if you do not make certain that we perform frequent checks for obstructions or for a building up of lint and further widespread causes of a blockage.

The Importance of a Clothes Dryer Vent Cleaning

The Importance of a Clothes Dryer Vent Cleaning

Nowadays not having a clothes dryer at home is something unfathomable. Years ago though the situation was quite different. These days they are so advanced in technology that it is not really important what kind of clothes dryer you have in your house, be it gas or electric powered. Although it has been said that gas powered dryers are less expensive and work more efficiently, many people still prefer the electric dryers. The fast and easy to use factor is what is taken note of in the purchase of clothes dryers.

The home appliance of your choice doesn’t actually last longer with the brand, version or the make. What really makes a big difference is about making sure that you do regular dryer vent cleaning that makes the machine last longer and work more efficiently. These home appliances usually have metal materials in them that make them more durable and also clean out any lint that gathers in them. This is why the vents are usually directed towards the outside of the house rather than going towards inwards.

Lint, fibers and gases from the hot air that the clothes dryer emits can be hazardous to a person’s health as they can be easily ingested. If there is no dryer vent cleaning that is conducted regularly for the clothes dryer, its performance will also be compromised which eventually will lead to heavy appliance repair costs. This means that if the air flow is blocked, it takes longer for the dryer to dry clothes, using up more electricity and money than you initially would with a well-maintained machine.

When doing any maintenance and cleaning work on your home appliance, all you really need is a regular schedule to use the vent brush and the lint trap brush. If the vent is brushed away of lint buildup and the lint trap is cleaned of those little pieces, your clothes dryer will work more efficiently and it will remain healthy for a longer time. This means that it can save you money as it dries clothes on time. Also, the air you breathe in your home is sure to be clean and untainted. This keeps you from having to deal with respiratory problems in the future.

So when you have decided to get yourself a new appliance for drying your clothes, never forget that it needs proper maintenance for it to work the optimal way and really dry your garments the fastest way possible. This will also ensure that you and your family will not be in any danger of inhaling the gases that a defect appliance might emit and you will definitely not be in danger of any fire hazards that the lint trapped in the vents can create in a jiffy if you’re not careful.

It is very easy to maintain the health of our home appliance by using a quality dryer vent cleaning equipment or a dryer vent brush that will clean out the vent in no time.
Most people do not think of dryer vent cleaning as a serious matter. Yet, as many as 15,000 fires start every year as a result of dryer lint build up. Furthermore, dryers with clogged vents waste costly energy and take longer to dry your clothes. Fortunately, keeping your dryer vent clean is easy and inexpensive.

Cleaning your dryer’s lint trap after every laundry load will reduce the risk of fire by as much as 90 percent. But dangerous and costly clogs can develop in the flexible duct between the dryer and wall, or in the duct inside the wall. In fact, clogs in these areas may actually reduce the amount of lint you find in the trap. Other signs of clogged ducts include hot laundry loads that remain wet, increased time needed to dry clothes, and increased external dryer temperature.

To avoid hazardous and inefficient build up, it is recommended that you clean your dryer’s ducts once a year or whenever you suspect a problem. Done properly, it is not a difficult procedure. It requires unplugging the dryer, disconnecting the exhaust tube from both the unit and the wall and cleaning out both the tube and the in-wall duct with a vacuum and a dryer brush.

If you are not handy with appliances, or are worried about properly disconnecting and reconnecting the dryer equipment, you can hire a professional service to clean your dryer vent ducts for you. Shop around and get several estimates, as the price for duct cleaning can range from $50 to more than $200, depending on what services are offered.

If you decide to clean the ducts yourself, be sure to use the correct tools. A strong vacuum cleaner such as a shop-vac will do much of the work, but you will also need to use a specialized dryer brush or auger with a flexible pole that can reach around corners within the wall. You will also likely need some attachments for your vacuum and power drill.

There are also several dryer cleaning kits on the market for today’s DIY homeowner. The kits include all the items you need for the job plus a few helpful vacuum adapters and power drill attachments. These kits are generally priced around $20 to $30.

Dryer vent cleaning is not complicated, but it can save you money in energy costs, and possibly save your life by preventing a laundry room fire. Whether you do it yourself, buy a kit, or hire a professional, it is important to keep your dryer vent clean.

So, you have been noticing that it is now taking longer to dry your clothes. And perhaps you have received a postcard in the mail from a company offering to clean your clothes dryer vents. Like many people, you are also perhaps wondering if dryer vent cleaning is really necessary.

According to a June 2003 Consumer Product Safety Commission report, in 1998 clothes dryers were associated with 15,600 fires, which resulted in 20 deaths and 370 injuries. The article goes on to explain that fires can occur when lint builds up in the dryer or in the exhaust duct. Lint can block the flow of air, cause excessive heat build-up, and result in a fire in some dryers.

Dryer vents are one of those “hidden” maintenance items that is often forgotten. The old adage; “out of sight, out of mind” really holds true when it comes to cleaning dryer vents. Unfortunately, neglecting this area of your home can produce harmful and in some instances, even fatal results.

A restricted dryer vent extends dryer run time, requiring more energy (your hard earned money) and can be an extreme fire hazard. Because so many homes burn each year due to dryer vent fires, it is recommended your clothes dryer vent be cleaned annually.

Some clothes dryer vents are readily accessible while others have long duct runs where moisture condenses and creates restriction. Still other dryer vents have sharp turns and twists or use flexible ducting which further restricts air-flow.

It is also extremely important to keep the lint screen clean after every load of clothes and that only aluminum ductwork is used to vent heat and moisture away from the dryer.

Annual clothes dryer vent cleaning, keeping your lint screen clean, and having short, straight, ductwork will help ensure the safety of your household. Using only aluminum ducting will further help prevent overheating and will add to your family’s safety.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Dryer vent cleaning is a service that I offer along with my professional window cleaning business. A great number of people I talk to have never put very much thought into how dangerous their clothes dryer can be.

Every year many deaths and injuries are caused due to clothes dryer fires. It is estimated that over 15,000 of these fires take place every year because of neglect.

A clothes dryer is a heating appliance and should be treated as one. With any household heating appliance certain precautions should be taken to ensure as much safety as possible.

There are four main concerns dealing with a dryer: fire hazard, excessive energy costs, mold development and carbon monoxide seepage (from gas operated dryers).

To reduce chances of clothes dryer fires and other hazards, it is recommended that your dryer is serviced and the dryer vent cleaned at least once or twice every year depending on the amount of usage.

As the dryer is used, moisture is released and vented outside through a venting system. Small amounts of lint will pass through the main lint trap and will stick to the moist inside walls of the dryer exhaust system and venting tube. Over time this lint will slowly start to build causing air flow restrictions. As this airflow is restricted, the dryer will have to run longer and longer each time. Longer run times mean higher utility costs and increased risk of fire. If the dryer is gas operated, it could also increase the chances of carbon monoxide leaking into your house.

Mold is also a concern with clogged dryer vents. Moisture being released from drying clothes will not be able to escape and will start to puddle at the lowest points of the exhaust system or venting tube. If this continues, the water will start to leak into walls and crawl spaces which create perfect mold growing conditions.

What to do:

- Do clean the lint trap before every use.
-	Do have your dryer and vent inspected and cleaned at least once every year.
-	Do inspect the outside end of the venting tube for any signs of lint build up or animal nests every month.
-	Do use a metal or foil connector from the dryer to the wall.
-	Do install a fire detector and carbon monoxide detector next to the dryer.

What not to do:

-	Do not run the dryer at night while you are sleeping or away from the house.
-	Do not over load the dryer.
-	Do not use plastic connectors from the dryer to the wall.
-	Do not crimp the vent connector between the dryer and the wall.
-	Do not dry material that contains flammable substances such as grease, gasoline, oil, mineral spirits, etc.
-	Do not vent directly into crawl spaces, attics, or garages. Some think this is a good way to use the excess heat from the dryer but, it will only aid in dangerous mold development.

Is Dryer Vent Cleaning Necessary?

Clothes dryer vent cleaning is an easy project yet an activity that not enough home owners do or do not do often enough. Dryer vent cleaning can often be completed by the homeowner but the location of the ducts, length of the dryer vents and other conditions quite often a trained dryer vent cleaning technician is warranted. If your clothes dryer is located adjacent an exterior wall of your house, the dryer duct system might be short enough in which case you can access all of the ducts and clean it sufficiently with a vacuum and brush. In different scenarios hiring a professional is warranted.

Anyone that is familiar with a clothes dryer fully understands that a meaningful quantity of lint is generated and that the lint trap has to be to be cleaned (the quantity of this stuff forever shocks me. Depending on the fabric, the lint trap usually requires cleaning after every load of clothes. Cleaning the lint trap improves air flow in the dryer and lets it operate more efficiently.

The lint trap does not catch all the lint. Some lint escapes through the dryer vents which is vented outside of your house but a certain amount of lint will become stuck in the dryer duct system, particularly in a flexible dryer duct with ridges and in corners in the ductwork as it travels to the exterior vent. The the greater the length of duct work the greater chance of lint not making it all the way to the exterior of your home as the air flow from the dryer deceases the further it has to travel.

A surprising number of house fires are caused every year by dryer hoses that become obstructed by lint. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) studies show that more than of 15,000 home fires annually are related clothes dryers with excessive lint build up being suspected in many of these fires. Lint is highly flammable and if dryer ducts get restricted and cannot properly release hot air created by the dryer heat build up can occur and ignite the lint.

To reduce the chance of fires, the CPSC recommends you:

Cleaning the lint trap after every load of clothes.

Clean the dryer vent and all ductwork regularly (this includes disconnecting the dryer from the ductwork).

Check the the vent on the outside of your home while the dryer is operating to make sure exhaust air is escaping. If it is not, the vent or the duct system may be clogged. Clean behind the dryer, where lint can build up. Have a qualified service person clean the inside of the dryer chassis periodically to minimize the amount of lint accumulation. Keep the area near the dryer clean and free of household items.

Replace accordion type hoses with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal ducts. Many manufacturers recommend rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal ducting because they provide better airflow. Flexible plastic or foil ducting trap more lint and are prone to kinks or crushing, which reduces airflow.

Be particularly careful when drying fabric which has been exposed to flammable chemicals such as gasoline, cooking oils, cleaning agents or wood finishing oils and stains. Consider washing items that have been exposed to these chemicals more than once to reduce the amount of the chemicals still on or in the laundry and, preferably, hang dry these clothes. Use the lowest heat setting and a drying cycle that has a cool-down period at the end of the cycle. Additionally, do not leave these items once dried in the dryer or in a pile.
